| Birth name Mateo Jesus Nunez, born
and raised in the DC area and plays an Underground NY style House music.
Started DJing at the age of 14 and landed 1st spot in Rasputin nightclub
in Georgetown at the age of 16. At the time, that was one of the only “House”
clubs in the D.C. area. |
| |
From there he continued to DJ in G-town
on the weekends and go to High School during the week. He used to ride
his bicycle back and forth from Arlington to G-town just so he could promote
himself in the area. When he was a senior in Highs School, Mateo landed
up guest DJing at 5th column. |
| |
After graduating from High School, he went to college
at Penn State and continued to Dj at the college radio station. During
each summer break, Mateo returned to DC and guest Djed at various clubs
such as Tracks, Zei club, The Edge, and Babylon. Finally, when he left
college Mateo returned to DC to enter a battle of the DJ’s where he won
the contest and started a residency at Bravo Bravo (Big Phat Pussy Cat)
on Thursdays. |

Shortly after that, he landed up at Zei club on Thursday
nights and 1 year after in 1996, he landed up at the Bank nightclub for
the Friday night residency. And if anyone remembers The Bank, they know
that it was the wildest, most coveted club in the area. At The Bank, Mateo
introduced the DC area to NY House music, and they loved it. It was bold,
because everyone at the time only played Commercial House, no one was
accustomed to hearing this style of music but they were rocking to it.
Mateo used to sell mixed tapes for $20-30 and CD’s for $30-50 at the club.
This shows how much people were digging the new style of music. |

After The Bank closed in 1999, Mateo went to Nations
where he was in a rotation of Djs every month. Mateo says: “It was great
playing for the gay community, because they really appreciate House music
and that’s what they loved.” |
| |
During that summer, Mateo went into the studio and
made his 1st CD, which was self titled “Mighty Matt Nunez”, and then went
to Emerald City nightclub in Florida where he became the resident DJ once
a week on Fridays. Mateo says: “It was a pain in the ass because they
would fly me to the club from DC on Friday morning, play that night and
leave Sunday afternoon.” |
| |
During the summer of 2001 and 2002, Mateo landed
a spot DJing at The House of Blues in New Orleans, which was a new experience
and whole new eye opener in the music realm. No matter where he has been,
his music style has never changed and never will. Mateo says: “House music
to me has soul, and it is in your mind, body and soul.” |
